Verse:001
Abdul Daryabadi : Nun By the pen and by that which they inscribe.
Dr. Mohsin : Nûn [These letters (Nûn, etc.) are one of the miracles of the Qur'ân, and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the pen and by what the (the angels) write (in the Records of men).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Nun , [QETafseerComment] by the pen and what they write,
Pickthal : Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith),
Yusuf Ali : Nun. By the Pen and by the (Record) which (men) write―


Verse:002
Abdul Daryabadi : Thou art nor, through the grace of thy Lord, mad.
Dr. Mohsin : You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman
Mufti Taqi Usmani : With the grace of your Lord, you are not insane. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman.
Yusuf Ali : Thou art not, by the grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed.


Verse:003
Abdul Daryabadi : And verily thine shall be a hire unending."
Dr. Mohsin : And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And you will definitely have a reward that will never end.
Pickthal : And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing.
Yusuf Ali : Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing:


Verse:004
Abdul Daryabadi : And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition.
Dr. Mohsin : And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted (standard of) character.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And you are surely on an excellent standard of character.
Pickthal : And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature.
Yusuf Ali : And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character.


Verse:005
Abdul Daryabadi : Anon thou wilt see and they will see:
Dr. Mohsin : You will see, and they will see,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So, you will see, and they will see
Pickthal : And thou wilt see and they will see
Yusuf Ali : Soon wilt thou see, and they will see


Verse:006
Abdul Daryabadi : Which of you is afflicted with madness.
Dr. Mohsin : Which of you is afflicted with madness.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Which of you is demented.
Pickthal : Which of you is the demented.
Yusuf Ali : Which of you is afflicted with madness.


Verse:007
Abdul Daryabadi : Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one,
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, your Lord is Best Knower of him who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Knower of those who are guided.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Surely your Lord knows best who has strayed from his way, and He is well aware of those who are on the right path.
Pickthal : Lo! thy Lord is best aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is best aware of those who walk aright.
Yusuf Ali : Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (True) Guidance.


Verse:008
Abdul Daryabadi : Wherefore obey not thou the beliers.
Dr. Mohsin : So (O Muhammad SAW) obey you not the deniers [(of Islâmic Monotheism those who belie the Verses of Allâh), the Oneness of Allâh, and the Messengership of Muhammad SAW].
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So, do not obey those who reject (the true faith.)
Pickthal : Therefor obey not thou the rejecters
Yusuf Ali : So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth).


Verse:009
Abdul Daryabadi : Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant.
Dr. Mohsin : They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : They wish that you become flexible (in your faith), so that they should become flexible (in their hostile attitude.) [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise.
Yusuf Ali : Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant; so would thy be pliant.


Verse:010
Abdul Daryabadi : And obey not: thou any swearer ignominous.
Dr. Mohsin : And (O Muhammad SAW) obey you not everyone Hallaf Mahin (the one who swears much, and is a liar or is worthless). (Tafsir At-Tabari)
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And do not obey any contemptible one who swears much,
Pickthal : Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger,
Yusuf Ali : need not the type of despicable man― ready with oaths.


Verse:011
Abdul Daryabadi : A defamer, spreader abroad of slander.
Dr. Mohsin : A slanderer, going about with calumnies,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : A slanderer who goes about with calumnies,
Pickthal : Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders,
Yusuf Ali : A slanderer, going about with calumnies.


Verse:012
Abdul Daryabadi : Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner.
Dr. Mohsin : Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : One who prevents good, (and who is) transgressor, sinful,
Pickthal : Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor
Yusuf Ali : (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds deep in sin.


Verse:013
Abdul Daryabadi : Gross, and therewithal ignoble-
Dr. Mohsin : Cruel, and moreover baseborn (of illegitimate birth).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Harsh, (and) after all that, notorious,
Pickthal : Greedy therewithal, intrusive.
Yusuf Ali : Violent (and cruel), with all that, base-born―


Verse:014
Abdul Daryabadi : Because he is owner of riches and children.
Dr. Mohsin : (He was so) because he had wealth and children.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Do not obey such a person merely) because he is a man of wealth and sons.
Pickthal : It is because he is possessed of wealth and children
Yusuf Ali : Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons.


Verse:015
Abdul Daryabadi : When Our revelations are rehearsed Unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients.
Dr. Mohsin : When Our Verses (of the Qur'ân) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!"
Mufti Taqi Usmani : When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “(These are) the tales of the ancient.” [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old.
Yusuf Ali : When to him are rehearsed Our Signs "Tales of the Ancients" he cries.


Verse:016
Abdul Daryabadi : Anon We shall brand him on snout.
Dr. Mohsin : We shall brand him on the snout (nose)!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : We will soon brand him on the snout.
Pickthal : We shall brand him on the nose.
Yusuf Ali : Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout!


Verse:017
Abdul Daryabadi : Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they swarethat they would surely reap it in the morning.
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : We have tested them as We had tested the Owners of the Garden, [QETafseerComment] when they had sworn an oath that they would pluck its fruits on the next morning,
Pickthal : Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed they would pluck its fruit next morning,
Yusuf Ali : Verily We have tried them as We tried the people of the Garden when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning.


Verse:018
Abdul Daryabadi : And they made not the exception.
Dr. Mohsin : Without saying: Inshâ' Allâh (If Allâh wills).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And did not make any exception (by saying insha’allah ).
Pickthal : And made no exception (for the Will of Allah);
Yusuf Ali : But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will").


Verse:019
Abdul Daryabadi : Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on.
Dr. Mohsin : Then there passed by on the (garden) visitation (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Then, there whirled around it a whirl (of calamity) from your Lord, while they were asleep.
Pickthal : Then a visitation came upon from thy Lord it while they slept
Yusuf Ali : Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around while they were asleep.


Verse:020
Abdul Daryabadi : Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped.
Dr. Mohsin : So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Thus, on the next morning, it was like a harvested field.
Pickthal : And in the morning it was as if plucked.
Yusuf Ali : So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered).


Verse:021
Abdul Daryabadi : Then they cried out Unto each other in the morning,
Dr. Mohsin : Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So, they called out each other as the morning broke,
Pickthal : And they cried out one unto another in the morning,
Yusuf Ali : As the morning broke, they called out one to another―


Verse:022
Abdul Daryabadi : Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap.
Dr. Mohsin : Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits."
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Saying, “Set out early, if you are going to pluck (the fruits).”
Pickthal : Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit).
Yusuf Ali : "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in morning, if ye would gather the fruits."


Verse:023
Abdul Daryabadi : So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice:
Dr. Mohsin : So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying),
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So they set out while they were whispering to each other,
Pickthal : So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones:
Yusuf Ali : So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)―


Verse:024
Abdul Daryabadi : Let there not enter upon you today any needy man.
Dr. Mohsin : No Miskîn (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Saying, “Let no poor man enter into it upon you today.”
Pickthal : No needy man shall enter it to-day against you.
Yusuf Ali : "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day."


Verse:025
Abdul Daryabadi : And they went out betimes determined in purpose.
Dr. Mohsin : And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And in early hours they rushed quickly, while they were (assuming themselves) powerful (to pluck the fruits and prevent the poor.)
Pickthal : They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose.
Yusuf Ali : And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve.


Verse:026
Abdul Daryabadi : Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed.
Dr. Mohsin : But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray,"
Mufti Taqi Usmani : But when they saw it (the place of the ruined garden), they said, “We have missed the way.”
Pickthal : But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error!
Yusuf Ali : But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way:


Verse:027
Abdul Daryabadi : Aye! it is we who are deprived!
Dr. Mohsin : (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!"
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Then, once they realized that the garden is the same, but it has been destroyed, they said,) “No, but we are deprived (of the fruits).”
Pickthal : Nay, but we are desolate!
Yusuf Ali : "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!"


Verse:028
Abdul Daryabadi : The most moderate of them said: said I not Unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not!
Dr. Mohsin : The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why say you not: Inshâ' Allâh (If Allâh wills)."
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Said he who was the best among them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Why do you not pronounce tasbih (Allah’s purity)?”
Pickthal : The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)?
Yusuf Ali : Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you `Why not glorify (Allah)?' "


Verse:029
Abdul Daryabadi : They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers.
Dr. Mohsin : They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zâlimûn (wrong-doers)."
Mufti Taqi Usmani : They said, “We pronounce the purity of our Lord. No doubt, we were wrongdoers.”
Pickthal : They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers.
Yusuf Ali : They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!"


Verse:030
Abdul Daryabadi : Then they turned to each other reproaching
Dr. Mohsin : Then they turned, one against another, blaming.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Then, (at the beginning,) they started reproaching one another;
Pickthal : Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching.
Yusuf Ali : Then they turned, one against another in reproach.


Verse:031
Abdul Daryabadi : They said: woe Unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant.
Dr. Mohsin : They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Tâghûn (transgressors and disobedient).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And at last,) they said, “Woe to us! In fact, we (all) were outrageous.
Pickthal : They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous.
Yusuf Ali : They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed!


Verse:032
Abdul Daryabadi : Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are Unto our Lord beseechers.
Dr. Mohsin : We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)."
Mufti Taqi Usmani : We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange something better than this. Truly we turn to our Lord.” [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord.
Yusuf Ali : "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!"


Verse:033
Abdul Daryabadi : Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew.
Dr. Mohsin : Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : In this way the punishment comes. And, of course, the punishment of the Hereafter is even greater, if they but realize!
Pickthal : Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know.
Yusuf Ali : Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter― if only they knew!


Verse:034
Abdul Daryabadi : Verily for the God-fearing, are with their Lord Gardens of Delight.
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, for the Muttaqûn (pious and righteous persons - see V.2:2) are Gardens of delight (Paradise) with their Lord.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Surely, for the God-fearing there are gardens of bliss.
Pickthal : Lo! for those who keep from evil are gardens of bliss with their Lord.
Yusuf Ali : Verily, for the Righteous are Gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord.


Verse:035
Abdul Daryabadi : Shall We then make the Muslims like the culprits?
Dr. Mohsin : Shall We then treat the Muslims (believers of Islamic Monotheism, doers of righteous deeds) like the Mujrimûn (criminals, polytheists and disbelievers)?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Otherwise, shall We make the obedient like the sinners?
Pickthal : Shall We then treat those who have surrendered as We treat the guilty?
Yusuf Ali : Shall We then treat the People of Faith like the People of Sin?


Verse:036
Abdul Daryabadi : What aileth you? How ill ye judge!
Dr. Mohsin : What is the matter with you? How judge you?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : What has happened to you? How do you judge?
Pickthal : What aileth you? How foolishly ye judge!
Yusuf Ali : What is the matter with you? How judge ye?


Verse:037
Abdul Daryabadi : Is there with you a Book wherein ye study:
Dr. Mohsin : Or have you a Book where in you learn,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Do you have a book in which you read
Pickthal : Or have ye a ******ure wherein ye learn
Yusuf Ali : Or have ye a Book through which ye learn―


Verse:038
Abdul Daryabadi : That therein is yours that which. ye may choose?
Dr. Mohsin : That you shall therein have all that you choose?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : That for you there is what you choose? [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : That ye shall indeed have all that ye choose?
Yusuf Ali : That ye shall have, through it whatever ye choose?


Verse:039
Abdul Daryabadi : Or have ye oaths from us reaching to the Day of Resurrection, that you shall be that which ye judge?
Dr. Mohsin : Or have you oaths from Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection that yours will be what you judge?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Or do you have oaths sworn by Us, remaining effective up to the Day of Judgment, that you will get what you decide?
Pickthal : Or have ye a covenant on oath from Us that reacheth to the Day of Judgment, that yours shall be all that ye ordain?
Yusuf Ali : Or have ye Covenants with Us on oath, reaching to the Day of Judgment, (providing) that ye shall have whatever ye shall demand?


Verse:040
Abdul Daryabadi : Ask then, which of them will stand thereof a surety?
Dr. Mohsin : Ask them, which of them will stand surety for that!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Ask them which of them stands surety for that.
Pickthal : Ask them (O Muhammad) which of them will vouch for that?
Yusuf Ali : Ask thou of them, which of them will stand surety for that!


Verse:041
Abdul Daryabadi : Have they associate gods? Then let them produce their associate gods if they say sooth!
Dr. Mohsin : Or have they "partners"? Then let them bring their "partners" if they are truthful!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Or do they have associate-gods (who have guaranteed safety for them)? Then, let them bring their associate-gods, if they are true.
Pickthal : Or have they other gods? Then let them bring their other gods if they are truthful
Yusuf Ali : Or have they some "Partners" (in Allah)? Then let them produce their "partners" if they are truthful!


Verse:042
Abdul Daryabadi : Remember the Day whereon the shank shall be bared and they shall be called upon to Prostrate themselves, but they shall not be able.
Dr. Mohsin : (Remember) the Day when the Shin[] shall be laid bare (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) and they shall be called to prostrate themselves (to Allâh), but they (hypocrites) shall not be able to do so.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : On the Day when the Shin will be exposed, [QETafseerComment] and they will be called upon to prostrate themselves, they will not be able to.
Pickthal : On the day when it befalleth in earnest, and they are ordered to prostrate themselves but are not able,
Yusuf Ali : The Day that the shin shall be laid bare, to prostrate, but they shall not be able---


Verse:043
Abdul Daryabadi : Downcast will be their looks; abjectness will overspread them. Surely they had been called upon to Prostrate themselves while yet they were whole.
Dr. Mohsin : Their eyes will be cast down and ignominy will cover them; they used to be called to prostrate themselves (offer prayers), while they were healthy and good (in the life of the world, but they did not).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : With their eyes downcast, they will be enveloped by ignominy. They used to be called upon to prostrate when they were healthy (but they did not.)
Pickthal : With eyes downcast, abasement stupefying them. And they had been summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet unhurt.
Yusuf Ali : Their eyes will be cast down, ignominy will cover them; seeing that they had been summoned aforetime to bow in adoration, while they were whole (and had refused).


Verse:044
Abdul Daryabadi : Let Me alone with him who belieth this discourse; step by step We lead them on when they perceive not.
Dr. Mohsin : Then leave Me Alone with such as belie this Qur'ân. We shall punish them gradually from directions they perceive not.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So, leave Me alone with those who reject this discourse. We will draw them on little by little (towards Hell) from a way they do not know.
Pickthal : Leave Me (to deal) with those who give the lie to this pronouncement. We shall lead them on by steps from whence they know not.
Yusuf Ali : Then leave Me alone with such as reject this Message: by degrees shall We punish them from directions they perceive not.


Verse:045
Abdul Daryabadi : And I bear with them; verily My contrivance is sure.
Dr. Mohsin : And I will grant them a respite. Verily, My Plan is strong.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And I give them respite. Indeed, My plan is firm.
Pickthal : Yet I bear with them, for lo! My scheme is firm.
Yusuf Ali : A (long) respite will I grant them: truly powerful is My plan.


Verse:046
Abdul Daryabadi : Askest thou a hire from them so that they are laden with debt?
Dr. Mohsin : Or is it that you (O Muhammad SAW) ask them a wage, so that they are heavily burdened with debt?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Is it that you ask them for a fee, due to which they are burdened with debt?
Pickthal : Or dost thou (Muhammad) ask a fee from them so that they are heavily taxed?
Yusuf Ali : Or is it that thou dost ask them for a reward, so that they are burdened with a load of debt?―


Verse:047
Abdul Daryabadi : Is with them the unseen, so that they write down?
Dr. Mohsin : Or that the Ghaib (unseen — here in this Verse it means Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz) is in their hands, so that they can write it down?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Or do they have the (knowledge of the) Unseen, and they write it down?
Pickthal : Or is the Unseen theirs that they can write (thereof)?
Yusuf Ali : Or that they Unseen is in their hands, so that they can write it down?


Verse:048
Abdul Daryabadi : Be patient thou, then, with thy Lords judgment, and be thou not like him of the fish, when he cried out while he was in anguish.
Dr. Mohsin : So wait with patience for the Decision of your Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish — when he cried out (to Us) while he was in deep sorrow. (See the Qur'ân, Verse 21:87).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So, remain patient with your Lord’s judgment, and be not like the Man of the Fish, [QETafseerComment] he cried out while he was in anguish.
Pickthal : But wait thou for thy Lord's decree, and be not like him of the fish, who cried out in despair.
Yusuf Ali : So wait with patience for the command of thy Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish― when he cried out in agony.


Verse:049
Abdul Daryabadi : Had not grace from his Lord reached him, he had surely been cast into the wilderness in a plight.
Dr. Mohsin : Had not a Grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been (left in the stomach of the fish, but We forgave him), so he was cast off on the naked shore, while he was to be blamed.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Had not a favour from His Lord come to his help, he would have been cast in the wilderness in a reproachable state. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : Had it not been that favour from his Lord had reached him he surely had been cast into the wilderness while he was reprobate.
Yusuf Ali : Had not Grace from His Lord reached him, he would indeed have been cast off on the naked shore, in disgrace.


Verse:050
Abdul Daryabadi : Then his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
Dr. Mohsin : Then his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Then his Lord chose him, and made him one of the righteous.
Pickthal : But his Lord chose him and placed him among the righteous.
Yusuf Ali : Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the company of the Righteous.


Verse:051
Abdul Daryabadi : And those who disbelieve well-nigh cause thee to stumble with their looks when they hear the Admonition, and they say: verily he is mad.
Dr. Mohsin : And verily, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes (through hatred) when they hear the Reminder (the Qur'ân), and they say: "Verily, he (Muhammad SAW) is a madman!"
Mufti Taqi Usmani : And indeed the disbelievers seem to trip you up with their glances [QETafseerComment] when they hear the Reminder, and say, “He is a madman indeed.”
Pickthal : And lo! those who disbelieve would fain disconcert thee with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say: Lo! he is indeed mad;
Yusuf Ali : And the Unbelievers would almost trip thee up with their eyes when they hear the Message; and they say: "Surely he is possessed!"


Verse:052
Abdul Daryabadi : While it is naught but an admonition Unto the worlds.
Dr. Mohsin : But it is nothing else than a Reminder to all the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
